Thales Research and Technology, France (TRT)

Partner Description

Partner Details - TRT

THALES Research & Technology-France (TRT-Fr), located near Paris, is the main multidisciplinary research unit of the THALES group, one of the major world players in professional electronics. Through its internal activities and scientific links with industries and universities, either in France or internationally, TRT-Fr is participating in the preparation of THALES industrial future in strategic R&D fields.

With over 250 highly skilled staff, 13000 sq. m of labs of which 1700 sq. m clean rooms, TRT-Fr's research teams perform pioneering work in the most advanced areas of optics & optoelectronics, electronic components for microwave applications, advanced interconnect and packaging, materials, software architecture and cognitive science.

Science & Technology skills, ranging from materials elaboration (epitaxy of various semiconductors or magnetic thin films, ceramics, polymers), through component modelling, processing, testing, assembly and packaging, to integration in appropriate demonstrators are available on site and allow full validation of the technologies investigated before their transfer to operational divisions of the THALES Group. In addition to R&D activities, TRT-Fr also provides scientific and technical advice, expertise or services for the company.

The Department of Optics and Optronics has a long skill in the field of optoelectronics, since the activity started in the 1960's with the basic studies on the semiconductor lasers. The activity was then extended to other new domains which were emerging at that time, including works on integrated optics, holography, diode pumped solid state lasers, non-linear optics, liquid crystal valves, LCD displays architectures, quasi-phase-matched non-linear crystals, optical processing for microwave applications, specific components.

Role in NANO UB-Sources

TRTs main role is devoted to the beam combining of several SLDs with different central wavelengths to achieve a broadband source. A breadboard prototype will be delivered to partners for OCT trial studies. More precisely, TRT will first specify special optics for a combination of wavelength and polarisation multiplexing. TRT will then demonstrate the optical system for a targeted bandwidth source greater than 200 nm.
